Vitamin C is a water-soluble nutrient. There are biological issues of obtaining a water-soluble nutrient into a fat-soluble environment, the solution can be liposomal vitamin C. Liposomes are fat-soluble carriers that transmit nutrients to cells of the body. (Levine M)
You can make liposomal vitamin C by following some easy steps.
- Collect ingredients: some special tools and ingredients are needed; for grocery liposomal vitamin C. You’ll find most of the components in well-known grocery stores, and you can also order them online. For example, some ingredients such as lecithin may be challenging to find in a grocery store. To prepare liposomal vitamin C, you’ll need:
- Distilled water
- Vitamin C tablets or powder (also sold as ascorbic acid)
- Vodka (40% alcohol)
- Powdered lecithin originated from soy or sunflower seeds (make sure the product used does not contain GMOs)
- High powered blender
- Scale for measures (in grams or ounces)
- Wide glass jar, such as a measuring cup or beaker
- Large Mason jar
- Measure out 9 ounces of filtered/distilled water and 12 ounces of vodka: It is essential to use steam-distilled water for this formula. Do not use ordinary tap water. Measure and pour water and vodka into a glass jar. If you have a measuring cup with measurements on the side, then this is suitable.
- Add vitamin C powder 6 ounces to water: Measure 6 ounces of vitamin C/ascorbic acid powder and add to the vodka and water mixture. Mix the vitamin C into the water and vodka until vitamin C is fully dissolved.
- For the vitamin C powder to be dissolved entirely, you can heat this mixture in a ceramic pan until it reaches 104°F (40°C).
- If you use vitamin C tablets, then you’ll need to grind down them. You can use a mortar and pestle or put tablets into a plastic bag and crush them using a rolling pin.
- Mix the lecithin: Weigh out 7 ounces of lecithin and add to the vitamin C, water, and vodka mixture. You can use lecithin derived from soy-derived or sunflower for this process. Then Pour the whole mixture in a blender.
- Blend the elements on high for about 4 minutes and put the blender in a refrigerator for some hours. Take the blender out and blend the mixture again for 4 minutes and then return the mixture to the fridge for a few more hours. Continue to mix and refrigerate five or six times for the next 24 hours.
- Take liposomal vitamin C into a large mason jar: Now, you have formulated liposomal vitamin C that you may store and use. It is not essential to do anything else. Using an ultrasonic unit will increase the number of liposomes created, but it is not necessary since you have already produced some liposomes by blending the ingredients.
- Collect materials: Remember that refining liposomal vitamin C with an ultrasonic unit is optional. If you don’t have the materials needed to enhance liposomal vitamin C, you have to order some tools, such as the glass beaker and ultrasonic unit. You’ll need:
- One mixture of basic liposomal vitamin C
- A high powered blender
- Plastic wrap
- 1liter glass beaker
- Ultrasonic unit
- A wooden spoon
- Blend the liposomal vitamin C formula you previously made one more time: Blend the liposomal vitamin C formula again until it feels warm. This process may take several minutes. Feel the blender to inspect the temperature. The temperature of the ingredients should be approximately 95°F (35°C).
- Take the basic liposomal vitamin C into a glass beaker: You have blended the vitamin C until it is warm. Now, transfer it into a glass beaker. The beaker that you use should be large enough to hold all of the blended ingredients and fit into the ultrasonic unit. You should check that before you transfer the mixture.
- Omit the bubbles with the ultrasonic unit: Place the beaker with the liposomal vitamin C mixture into the ultrasonic unit for barely 30 minutes. The ultrasonic unit will lift the bubbles to the surface. After 30 minutes, cover the beaker in a plastic wrap and place into the refrigerator for about an hour. Afterward, use a wooden spoon to remove the bubbles on the surface.
- Follow the manufacturer’s directions for how to use the ultrasonic unit strictly.
- Place liposomal vitamin C back into the ultrasonic unit: Let the ultrasonic unit run until the temperature of the vitamin C mixture reaches 90°F (32°C). This will kill any bacteria present in your liposomal vitamin C.
- Take the liposomal vitamin C into a glass jar: When the liposomal vitamin C is prepared, you can transfer it into a glass jar. Tight-fitting the jar lid so that you need not worry about it leaking. A mason jar will serve well for storing liposomal vitamin C.
- Store your liposomal vitamin C in the refrigerator: Keeping your liposomal vitamin C in the fridge will prevent spoilage, but remember that it has a short shelf-life. Your liposomal vitamin C will only retain for around three to four days, so you’ll require preparing a batch twice per week if you need to consume it regularly.
- Consume one tablespoon of liposomal vitamin C/day: Liposomal vitamin C is a powerful supplement, so you just need to consume one tablespoon per day. For adequate absorption, you have to take it on an empty stomach. You can mix it with juice or water because Vitamin C is quite sour.
- Remember that Vitamin C can increase the absorption of iron in foods: Vitamin C improves the proportion of iron that you absorb from foods that contain iron or from iron supplements (Levine M) so, do not exceed the daily allowance of iron from food or supplements.
- Some sources say to wait at least an hour after taking liposomal vitamin C before eating red meat.
- Don’t consume liposomal vitamin C before a blood glucose test: Vitamin C can alter the outcomes of a blood glucose test, so it is suggested not to be consumed about two to three days before a blood glucose test to prevent this from happening.(Levine M) You must inform your doctor that you have been taking liposomal vitamin C.
